Power Consumption Calculation

In Tamil Nadu the electricity tariffs are as follows,

0 – 100 units –> Rs.1.10 per unit.
101 – 200 units –> Rs.1.80 per unit.
201 – 500 units –> Rs.3.50 per unit.
501 units and above –> Rs. 5.75 per unit.

1 unit stands for 1 KWH i.e. 1000 watt hours. It means consuming 1000 watts in 1 hr (or) consuming 500 watts in 2 hrs and so on

Say, the bi-monthly bill is around 1400. So,

A*1.10 + B*1.80 + C* 3.50 + D*5.75 = Rs. 1400,

where A is the units consumed that is less than  or equal to 100, B is the units consumed between 101 & 200, C is the units consumed between 201 & 500 and D is the number of units consumed in excess of 500.

A = 100
B = 200
C = 300
110 +180 + 1050 + D*5.75 = 1400

D = (1400 – 1340) /5.75 = 10.4 or approx 10 units

So, power consumed would be 610 units in 2 months i.e., 61 days. Approximately, 10 units per day or 0.4 units per hour, on an average.

For our home in CBE, power consumption is 500 watts per hour in the morning (6 KWH) for 12 hrs and 333 watts per hour for 12 hrs (4 KWH) at night.
