Solar Power Installation Pitfalls

After talking to some friends while installing solar system for our home, I came across a few pitfalls. So far my experience has been good with solar. We have solar water heater in our home for 8 years, with no issues. So i am putting it together to warn others.

1. Recognize whom you buy from.

There are lot of solar power companies popping up like mushrooms, due to the sudden increase in awareness of solar power. Buyers Beware. The replaceable warranty on paper is worth nothing, if the company that installed for you disappears.

Go with your own electrician, if you know his business for many years. Otherwise go for a brand like Tata BP Solar. On the same note, I have not installed Tata BP solar, but I have installed solar water heater from Tata BP Solar.

2.  Friends And Family

The best is to start with any of your known friends or Family, who have installed solar power on their home.

There is a lot of people who have good experience and there is a lot who have bad experience.
Talk to both, learn from others' mistakes, then make your choice wisely with out haste.

3. Visually inspect the electrical components before you pay for them.

Say, the panels need to have solid rugged constructions, the maker of the inverter should be reasonably known.

4. Mono crystalline panels, a lot of these are getting dumped from China and they are made of Aluminum. Watch out, they don't last.

5. Battery.

Sealed Lead Acid (SLA) battery also known as tubular battery. There are many international brands in India and also local brands. Local brands are also good, that still means you have to do your due diligence.

Ensure to use hybrid inverter and set the threshold at 50%. Only that way you can get maximum life on the battery.

So all this can be summarized as,

Buyers beware, the technology is proven, its up to you to verify what you pay for.
